Design and Appearance

The flag of the United Kingdom, commonly called the Union Jack, combines three heraldic crosses. It features the red cross of Saint George, the white saltire of Saint Andrew, and the red saltire of Saint Patrick on a blue field.

History and Adoption

The current design dates from 1801, after the Acts of Union merged the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland. The flag represents the union of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom.

Usage and Protocol

The Union Jack is the official national flag flown on government buildings and at official events. It is also used by the British Overseas Territories and the Royal Navy. Proper flag etiquette is defined by government guidance, which is published on the official UK government website gov.uk.
