Who Was the BTK Killer?

The BTK Killer, later identified as Dennis Rader, murdered ten people in the Wichita, Kansas area between 1974 and 1991. The name stands for Bind, Torture, Kill, reflecting his escalating methods. Rader worked as a compliance officer and church president, maintaining a public image that concealed his crimes.

How the Investigation Unfolded

For years, investigators followed hundreds of tips and pursued multiple suspects while BTK taunted police through letters and phone calls. The case went cold until 2004, when Rader began communicating again via floppy disks and letters. Metadata embedded in a Microsoft Word document helped trace the files back to his church computer, providing a critical link.

Arrest, Evidence, and Conviction

Police arrested Dennis Rader in February 2005 after he provided additional evidence that confirmed his identity. He pleaded guilty to ten murders and was sentenced to multiple life terms without parole. The BTK case remains a landmark example of how digital evidence and persistent detective work can resolve long-running investigations.
