Who Is Known as the Most Hated Woman in America
The phrase most often refers to Elizabeth Holmes, the former CEO of Theranos. She founded the blood-testing startup and promoted claims that it could run hundreds of medical tests with a single drop of blood. Federal prosecutors later found those claims to be false.
What Happened in the Theranos Case
Theranos claimed its technology could revolutionize lab testing, but regulators and experts raised concerns early on. In 2018, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charged Holmes with defrauding investors by overstating the company’s technology and financials. She was later convicted on multiple fraud charges.
Why Public Opinion Turned Strongly Negative
Holmes became a symbol of tech deception after reports and documentaries revealed internal doubts about Theranos’s claims. Former employees, partners, and patients described misleading marketing and unreliable test results. Media coverage focused on the gap between her public image and the company’s actual capabilities.
