What Was the Roanoke Colony?

The Roanoke Colony was an English settlement established on Roanoke Island, off the coast of present-day North Carolina, in 1587. It was sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh under a charter from Queen Elizabeth I. The colony was intended to create a permanent foothold in the New World and explore the surrounding region.

Why Is It Called the Lost Colony?

The colony is called the Lost Colony because when supply ships returned in 1590, all settlers had vanished. The only clue was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a wooden post and "CRO" carved into a nearby tree. No bodies, battle sites, or clear evidence of violence were found at the time.

What Do Historians Think Happened?

Historians believe the settlers likely dispersed and integrated with local Native American groups, including the Croatoan people on Hatteras Island. Some archaeological finds, such as European artifacts and copper items, suggest contact between colonists and Indigenous communities. Ongoing research continues to examine these connections and document the colony's fate.
