What Is a Therapy Pony

A therapy pony is a small horse trained to provide comfort, affection, and emotional support in structured therapeutic settings. Unlike service ponies, therapy ponies do not perform specific tasks for a single person with a disability. They work alongside handlers in hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and counseling programs to help reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness.

Therapy Pony vs Service Pony vs Emotional Support Animal

A service pony is individually trained to perform tasks for one person with a disability and has public access rights under the ADA. An emotional support animal provides comfort but does not require specialized training and has limited legal access. A therapy pony participates in supervised visits and is not granted the same public access as a service animal.

How to Find a Legitimate Therapy Pony Program

Look for organizations registered with recognized therapy animal groups that follow clear training, evaluation, and liability standards. Reputable programs screen both ponies and handlers for health, temperament, and safety. You can search local mental health centers, hospitals, or accredited therapy animal registries to find verified visits and volunteer opportunities.
