Early Life and Career

Thomas P Stafford was born on September 17, 1930, in Weatherford, Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in engineering and later became a U.S. Air Force pilot and test pilot. Stafford was selected by NASA in 1962 as part of the second group of astronauts.

Key Space Missions

Stafford flew on Gemini 6A, Gemini 9A, Apollo 10, and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. He commanded Gemini 9A and Apollo 10, which served as a critical dress rehearsal for the Moon landing. His work helped advance rendezvous, docking, and long-duration mission operations.

Legacy and Honors

Stafford received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. He retired from NASA in 1979 and continued to support aerospace and defense consulting. His career is widely cited in spaceflight history and astronaut biographies.
