Initial TikTok Ban Date and Executive Order

On August 6, 2020, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order citing national security concerns and setting an initial TikTok ban date of September 20, 2020. The order targeted transactions with the app’s parent company, ByteDance, and gave the company a 45-day window to complete a sale to a U.S. entity.

The effective TikTok ban date was later extended to November 12, 2020, after the U.S. Department of Commerce adjusted the timeline. Multiple lawsuits were filed by TikTok and its users, arguing the ban violated due process and free speech. Federal courts in California and Washington blocked the ban, and the litigation continued through 2021.

Later U.S. TikTok Ban Date and App Store Restrictions

In January 2025, President Trump issued a new executive order setting a TikTok ban date of January 19, 2025, for app store removal. On January 18, 2025, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., granted a temporary restraining order, pausing the enforcement of the ban. The case remains active while courts review the government’s national security justifications.
