What Is Trooping the Colour

Trooping the Colour is an annual British military ceremony held in London to celebrate the official birthday of the sovereign. Regiments parade their flags, known as colours, in front of the monarch. The event combines battlefield tradition with modern royal pageantry on a large scale.

History and Ceremony

The ceremony dates back centuries and was traditionally used to help soldiers recognise their regiment's flag on the battlefield. Today it takes place on Horse Guards Parade, near St James's Park, with the Household Division and the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery. The sovereign travels from Buckingham Palace and takes the royal salute, while a selected colour is trooped down the ranks.

Attending and Watching

Tickets are required for the seated stands along the parade route, and they are typically released through official channels. Free standing areas are available along The Mall and surrounding streets, but they fill early. For official details on tickets, schedule, and security, visitors can check the Household Division page at https://www.householddivision.org.uk/trooping-the-colour
