TSA Liquids Rule Overview

The Transportation Security Administration limits liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on bags to containers of 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters each. All containers must fit inside one clear, quart-sized, resealable plastic bag. This rule applies to water, beverages, toiletries, and similar items, and it is part of standard security screening procedures.

Exceptions and Special Items

Certain liquids are allowed in larger quantities if they are medically necessary, baby formula, or breast milk. These items may be subject to additional screening. Duty-free liquids purchased in secure areas and sealed in tamper-evident bags are also generally permitted. Solid deodorants, stick lip balms, and similar solid forms are not restricted by the liquids rule.

Tips for Compliance

Travelers can reduce delays by placing the quart-sized bag in an easily accessible part of their carry-on and removing it for separate screening. Emptying partially full containers and checking larger liquid bottles in checked baggage helps avoid issues at the checkpoint. For detailed guidance, travelers can refer to the official TSA website at https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/liquids-gels-aerospace.
