What Is a Tusked Whale

A tusked whale is a common name for the narwhal, a medium sized toothed whale known for its long spiral tusk. The tusk is actually an elongated upper left canine tooth that can grow over two meters long.

Habitat and Diet

Narwhals live in Arctic waters around Greenland, Canada, and Russia. They feed on fish, squid, and shrimp, often diving deep under sea ice. Their migrations follow seasonal changes in ice cover and prey availability.

Conservation Status

The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists narwhals as a species of least concern, though local populations face threats from climate change, shipping, and hunting.
