What Does It Mean to Volunteer for Mars
Volunteering for a Mars mission means agreeing to travel to the planet and live there for months or years. People apply through space agencies and private companies. They accept risks such as radiation, isolation, and equipment failure.
Who Is Recruiting Mars Volunteers
Several organizations are looking for Mars volunteers. NASA studies long-duration missions through its Artemis and Mars planning work. SpaceX is developing Starship with the goal of sending people to Mars. The Mars Society runs analog missions on Earth to test crew dynamics and technology.
Risks, Selection, and What Volunteers Can Expect
Mars volunteers face physical and mental challenges. They may experience bone loss, muscle weakness, and communication delays of up to 22 minutes. Selection processes include medical exams, psychological testing, and team training. For more on human spaceflight risks, see the NASA Humans in Space page.
