What Are Military Reserves

Military reserves are trained personnel who are not on full-time active duty but can be called to serve during emergencies, conflicts, or national needs. They maintain civilian careers or attend school while remaining ready to support the armed forces. Reserves exist in most countries with professional or volunteer military forces.

Roles and Responsibilities

Reservists perform the same or similar duties as active-duty soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines, but usually train part time. They conduct periodic drills, attend annual training, and maintain readiness to deploy when activated. During crises, reserves can provide additional manpower, specialized skills, and logistical support to active forces.

Reserves vs Active Duty

Active-duty personnel serve full time and are available for deployment at any time. Reservists serve part time and are typically called up only when the nation requires extra capacity. Reservists often receive benefits such as tuition assistance, healthcare, and retirement credit, while keeping their civilian jobs or education plans.
