Immediate Cause of Death
Jim Croce died in a small-plane crash on September 20, 1974, in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined the accident was caused by a loss of engine power shortly after takeoff, leading to a stall and uncontrolled descent. The plane struck a tree and crashed short of the runway, killing Croce and the pilot instantly.
Background of the Accident
Croce had just finished a concert at Northwestern State University and was traveling to Sherman, Texas, for another performance. The twin-engine Beechcraft E18S took off in early evening conditions. Investigators cited possible factors such as engine failure, weight, and limited visibility, but the primary finding was a loss of power during the initial climb.
Key Details and Context
The NTSB report listed the crash as an uncontrolled descent in-flight, with no evidence of pre-existing structural failure. Weather was not a primary factor, though visibility was reduced. The accident occurred at a small regional airport, and the aircraft did not reach a safe altitude before it stalled and impacted terrain.
Legacy and Impact
At the time of his death, Croce was rising to mainstream success, with hits like "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "Time in a Bottle." The crash cut short a career that had moved from folk clubs to major labels and television appearances. His recordings continued to chart after his passing, cementing his place in popular music history. NTSB Aviation Accident Data
