What Is My Niece's Son Called

Your niece's son is called your nephew. In standard English usage, nephew refers to the son of your brother, sister, niece, or nephew. The relationship is one step removed from your direct siblings, but the word nephew remains the standard term.

How the Relationship Works

Your niece is the daughter of your brother or sister. Her son is therefore the child of your sibling's child, making him your nephew. You and your nephew share a set of grandparents, but you are not in the same direct generation as his parents.

The female equivalent of nephew is niece. When the relationship skips a generation, the term grandnephew or great-nephew is sometimes used for the child of your nephew. For more on family relationship terms, see the FamilySearch guide to family relationships.
