Who Was Ahmaud Arbery

Ahmaud Arbery was a 25-year-old Black man and former high school track athlete in Georgia. He was known in his community for his athleticism and was often seen jogging in his neighborhood.

The Fatal Confrontation

On February 23, 2020, Arbery was jogging in a residential neighborhood in Brunswick, Georgia. He was confronted by two white men, Gregory McMichael and his son Travis McMichael, who suspected him of recent local burglaries. The men pursued Arbery in their truck with a shotgun. During the confrontation, Travis McMichael shot and killed Arbery.

The initial local investigation did not result in arrests, which drew widespread national attention and protests. The case was later taken over by state and federal prosecutors. In November 2021, Travis McMichael was convicted of federal hate crimes and state murder charges, with his father and a third man also convicted.
