What Is an Alligator Lizard

An alligator lizard is a small to medium sized reptile with a long body, distinct head scales, and a tail that can break off if grabbed. They belong to the family Anguidae and are found in parts of North America. Their name comes from their armored, crocodile like appearance.

Where Alligator Lizards Live

Most species live on the ground in forests, grasslands, and scrub areas, often hiding under rocks, logs, or leaf litter. Some climb low vegetation and rocks, which can give the impression that they are in the air when viewed from below. They are not aerial animals and do not fly or glide.

Why You Might See One Above Ground

You may spot an alligator lizard on a low branch, fence post, or wall while it hunts insects and other small invertebrates. Their quick movements and ability to scale rough surfaces can make them seem airborne for a moment.
