What Is the Elf on the Shelf Story

The Elf on the Shelf is a children's Christmas tradition in which a small elf figurine is placed in a home each December. The elf is said to observe children's behavior and report back to Santa Claus nightly. Each morning, the elf is found in a new location, reinforcing the idea that it has moved during the night.

Origin and Book

The tradition began with the 2005 picture book The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition by Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell. The book explains that scout elves are sent from the North Pole to watch over children. Families adopt a plush elf, name it, and follow the story's rules to keep the magic alive throughout the holiday season.

How the Tradition Works

Each evening, the elf is said to fly back to the North Pole to share the family's highlights with Santa. Children are encouraged not to touch the elf, as doing so may cause it to lose its Christmas magic. Parents move the elf to a new spot each morning, creating a playful scavenger hunt that builds excitement leading up to Christmas.
