How Heat and Boiling Kill the Amoeba

Brain eating amoeba, such as Naegleria fowleri, are killed by high temperatures. Boiling water for one minute at sea level effectively destroys the organism. At higher altitudes, longer boiling times are recommended. This method is used to ensure water is safe for nasal use in regions where the amoeba is present.

Chlorine and Disinfection Methods

Properly chlorinated water kills the amoeba when levels are maintained correctly. The CDC states that standard municipal water treatment with chlorine can eliminate Naegleria fowleri when disinfection is consistent. For pools and recreational water, maintaining recommended chlorine and pH levels reduces the risk of contamination.

Filtration and Other Water Treatment

Filters with an absolute pore size of one micron or smaller can remove the amoeba from water. The EPA provides guidance on point-of-use filters for additional protection in areas with potential contamination. Ultraviolet light and ozone treatment are also effective at inactivating the organism when applied correctly.
