Sports at the First Winter Olympics

The first Winter Olympic Games took place in Chamonix, France, in 1924. The official program included six sports: bobsled, curling, ice hockey, figure skating, Nordic skiing, and speed skating. These events were chosen to highlight cold-weather athletic disciplines that had no place in the Summer Games.

Disciplines and Events

Under those six sports, athletes competed in 16 events. Figure skating included men’s and women’s singles plus pairs. Ice hockey featured a men’s tournament, while speed skating covered multiple distances. Nordic skiing encompassed cross-country and ski jumping, and bobsled had a four-man event.

Legacy and Recognition

The Chamonix Games were later recognized as the first Winter Olympics by the International Olympic Committee. Many of the original sports remain core parts of the Winter Games today. For more details on the history and evolution of the Winter Olympics, see the official overview at olympics.com.
