What Is Real ID Compliance

Real ID is a federal standard for state-issued driver licenses and identification cards. After May 3, 2023, compliant documents are required for domestic air travel and entry into certain federal facilities. The rules come from the REAL ID Act and are enforced by the Department of Homeland Security.

States and Territories That Are Real ID Compliant

All 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several U.S. territories participate in the Real ID program. Each jurisdiction issues compliant licenses or IDs to residents who provide required documents. Some states issue a separate Real ID credential, while others mark compliance directly on the standard license. You can check your state’s status on the Department of Homeland Security website.

How to Know If Your State Is Compliant

Look for a star or similar indicator on your license or ID. A gold or black star means the document meets Real ID requirements. If your state offers a non-compliant option, you may need to visit a DMV in person and bring proof of residency, Social Security number, and legal name. For details, visit the official DHS Real ID page.
