When Did Adam Walsh Go Missing
Adam Walsh disappeared on July 27, 1981, from a Sears department store in Hollywood, Florida. He was six years old and had been briefly separated from his mother while she returned a video tape.
What Happened After He Went Missing
Adam’s severed head was found two weeks later in a drainage canal. The case remained unsolved for decades until police identified Ottis Toole as the killer in 2008. Toole later recanted, but authorities closed the case based on evidence and his confession.
Why the Case Still Matters
The Walsh case led to major changes in how communities handle missing children. It helped inspire the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and broader awareness efforts. Learn more about the timeline and impact on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website.
