When Did Queen Anne Die

Queen Anne died on 1 August 1714 at Kensington Palace in London. She was 49 years old and had ruled Great Britain and Ireland since 1707. Her death ended the Stuart line on the British throne.

Cause of Death and Final Years

Anne suffered from poor health for years, including repeated strokes, gout, and obesity. In her final years she was often too ill to attend government business. She died from complications related to a stroke.

Succession After Queen Anne

Because Anne had no surviving children, the crown passed to her second cousin George I of Hanover. This followed the Act of Settlement 1701, which aimed to secure a Protestant succession. Her death marked the start of the Hanoverian era in Britain.

For more details on her life and reign, see the official Royal Collection Trust page Queen Anne.
