When Do Garter Snakes Come Out of Hibernation

Garter snakes typically emerge from hibernation in early to mid spring, often when daytime temperatures consistently rise above 50°F (10°C). In warmer southern regions, they may appear as early as February, while northern populations usually wait until March or April.

What Triggers Their Emergence

Rising soil and air temperatures are the main triggers. As the ground warms, snakes leave their dens to bask and begin searching for food and mates. They often emerge on sunny days when temperatures are above 50°F (10°C).

Where They Go After Hibernation

After emerging, garter snakes stay near their hibernation sites, moving to nearby sunny spots, rock piles, or tall grass to warm up. They feed on earthworms, slugs, and small amphibians. For more details on their behavior, see the garter snake overview.
