When Is Day of the Dead Celebrated

Day of the Dead is primarily observed on November 1 and November 2. November 1, often called Día de los Inocentes or All Saints' Day, honors deceased children. November 2, All Souls' Day, honors deceased adults.

Origins and Dates of the Celebration

The holiday blends pre-Columbian indigenous rituals with Spanish Catholic traditions brought to Mexico in the 16th century. It coincides with the Catholic feasts of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. UNESCO recognized the tradition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.

How Day of the Dead Is Observed

Families build ofrendas, or home altars, decorated with marigolds, candles, photos, and the favorite foods and drinks of the deceased. Graves are cleaned and decorated in cemeteries. Public parades, face painting inspired by calavera skulls, and community gatherings are common. The holiday is not a single-day event but a multi-day observance centered on remembrance and family.
