What Is 'Where the Crawdads Sing' About
Where the Crawdads Sing is a coming-of-age mystery novel by Delia Owens, first published in 2018. It follows Kya Clark, a girl who grows up isolated in the marshes of coastal North Carolina and later becomes the subject of a murder investigation.
Is the Story Based on True Events
The novel is fiction, not a retelling of a specific true crime case. Delia Owens has stated that the story and characters are imagined, though the marsh ecology and setting are drawn from her real-life research in the southeastern United States.
Where the Setting and Themes Come From
Owens drew on her experience studying wildlife in Africa and the U.S. coastal marshes to build the novel’s natural world. The book explores themes of solitude, survival, and the relationship between people and nature, as explained by the author and publisher materials.
