Principal Photography in Maryland
The 1999 horror film was primarily shot on location in and around Burkittsville, Maryland. Directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez chose the rural Crampton's Gap area for its dense forests and isolated atmosphere.
Key Filming Sites Near Burkittsville
Many scenes were filmed in the woods and trails of Gathland State Park and South Mountain. The iconic house used in the film was constructed in a remote woodland area off of Route 11 in Maryland.
Why the Location Matters
The isolated Maryland setting helped create the found-footage illusion that made the film famous. The production used the real geography of the region to ground its fictional legend in a believable place. For more details, see the The Blair Witch Project Wikipedia page.
