Which President Pardoned the First Turkey
President Harry Truman is widely credited with the first turkey pardon, though the term was not used at the time. During the postwar period, Truman received a live turkey and spared it from the holiday table.
The modern tradition of a formal presidential turkey pardon began in the 1940s and 1950s, when live turkeys started arriving at the White House. Early presidents often accepted the birds as gifts, and Truman became associated with sparing the first one.
History of the Presidential Turkey Pardon
The practice evolved from earlier customs in which turkeys were sent to the White House for Thanksgiving. Over time, the public attention shifted from eating the bird to sparing it, and the pardon became a lighthearted annual ritual.
Today the National Turkey Federation presents the bird, and the president issues a formal pardon before Thanksgiving. The event is covered each year and remains a widely recognized White House tradition.
Why the Turkey Pardon Matters
The pardon highlights the cultural role of the White House and the president as a symbolic figure. It also connects modern Americans to a long-running tradition of presidential gifts and public ceremonies.
