John du Pont used his inherited wealth to fund various projects, including the Foxcatcher Farm estate in Pennsylvania. He became known for sponsoring wrestling programs and athletes, establishing the Foxcatcher National Wrestling Training Center. His involvement in sports philanthropy brought both attention and controversy.

In 1996, John du Pont was convicted of murdering Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz. He was found to be mentally ill but guilty and sentenced to prison.
