Who Is the Tallest Basketball Player
The tallest basketball player in recorded history is often cited as Robert Wadlow, though he was not a professional player. Among professional players, the tallest widely recognized figure is Sun Mingming, a Chinese center listed at approximately 7 feet 9 inches. He played in the NBA Development League and international leagues, confirming his height through official team records and medical checks.
In the NBA, the tallest players in history include Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol, both officially listed at 7 feet 7 inches. Their heights are documented in NBA archives and team media guides. These measurements are based on standardized pre-draft physicals and are widely accepted by basketball historians and official league sources.
Height in basketball is measured barefoot or with shoes depending on the league. The NBA records player heights in shoes, while international competitions often use barefoot measurements. This difference can create slight variations in listed heights across different leagues and databases.
