Who Owns the Royal Yacht Britannia

The Royal Yacht Britannia is owned by the Crown Estate on behalf of the British sovereign. The vessel was decommissioned in 1997 and is no longer part of the Royal Navy fleet.

History and Decommissioning

Britannia served the royal family from 1954 until 1997, when the government announced the end of the royal yacht programme. The decision followed a review of costs and changing use of the ship.

Current Status and Location

Today, Britannia is permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal in Leith, Edinburgh, where it operates as a visitor attraction and event venue. The ship is managed by the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, which maintains the vessel and welcomes public tours.

For official visitor information and history, see the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust website at royalyachtbritannia.co.uk.
