Who Was Dolly the Sheep

Dolly was a female Finn Dorset sheep, born on July 5, 1996, at the Roslin Institute in Scotland. She was the first mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell using a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer.

Why Dolly the Sheep Was Important

Dolly proved that the DNA from a specialized adult cell could be reprogrammed to create a whole new organism. Her creation advanced stem cell research and changed scientific understanding of cellular development and cloning.

Dolly the Sheep Cause of Death and Legacy

Dolly lived to be six years old and was euthanized after developing a progressive lung disease common in sheep. Her preserved remains are displayed at the National Museum of Scotland, and her cloning laid the groundwork for modern regenerative medicine and genetic research.
