Who Assassinated President Garfield

James A. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States, was shot by Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881. Guiteau was a disappointed office seeker who believed he deserved a government job. His attack took place in Washington, D.C., and Garfield died from his wounds months later. For more background on Garfield’s presidency, see the White House historical overview.

Why Guiteau Shot Garfield

Charles Guiteau had written a speech supporting Garfield’s campaign and expected a diplomatic appointment in return. When he was denied, he decided to kill the president. Guiteau shot Garfield at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station. He stated he was acting on divine inspiration and political frustration.

Aftermath and Historical Significance

Garfield survived the initial shooting but developed severe infections. Medical care at the time, including unsterile examinations, worsened his condition. He died on September 19, 1881. Guiteau was tried, found guilty, and executed in 1882. The case highlighted issues with mental health law and presidential security in the late 19th century.
