What Does the First Recorded Crime Tell Us?

There is no single verified answer to who was the first person to commit a crime. Early human societies developed rules and punishments as they settled into agricultural communities, but written records are limited.

Some of the earliest known legal systems come from ancient Mesopotamia. The Code of Ur-Nammu and later the Code of Hammurabi describe offenses and penalties, showing that theft, murder, and property damage were already recognized as crimes.

Why the First Criminal Is Unknown

Before writing, crimes were handled through oral tradition and community justice. The first individual to break a formal law cannot be identified with certainty. Written laws only appear in the archaeological record from about 4,000 years ago, long after humans first lived in organized groups.
