Recent Scripps Spelling Bee Winners
The Scripps National Spelling Bee is an annual competition for young spellers in the United States and select international regions. The winner is determined through multiple rounds of oral and written spelling rounds. Recent champions have come from a range of states, with the event often attracting national media attention each spring.
How the Spelling Bee Champion Is Chosen
Contestants progress through preliminary written and oral rounds. Spellers are eliminated after misspelling a word, and the last remaining speller is declared the champion. In some years, the bee has ended in a tie when the remaining spellers correctly spell all remaining words. The competition uses a standardized word list and official pronouncer.
