Background of John Mark Karr
John Mark Karr was an American former elementary school teacher who became a person of interest in the 1996 murder of child beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey. In 1996, he was living in Thailand and had a documented obsession with child beauty pageants.
Why He Confessed
In August 2006, Karr traveled from Thailand to the United States and voluntarily told authorities that he was responsible for the killing. Investigators later concluded that his confession was false. Karr later stated that he sought attention and fame by claiming involvement in a notorious unsolved case.
Investigation Outcome
DNA evidence collected from the crime scene did not match Karr, and prosecutors declined to file charges. The case remains officially unsolved. The incident is often cited in discussions about false confessions and the psychology behind admitting to crimes one did not commit.
