What Is Biological Aging

Aging is the gradual decline in the body’s ability to maintain and repair itself over time. Cells divide less efficiently, tissues lose elasticity, and organ function slowly decreases. This process increases vulnerability to disease and reduces overall resilience as years pass.

Key Cellular and Molecular Causes

Several mechanisms drive aging at the cellular level. Telomeres, the protective caps on chromosomes, shorten with each cell division, eventually limiting replication. Accumulated DNA damage from oxidative stress and metabolic byproducts impairs normal function. Mitochondria, the cell’s energy producers, become less efficient, generating more harmful free radicals. These processes are interconnected and progressively weaken cellular systems.

Lifestyle and Genetic Influences

Genetics set a baseline for how quickly aging processes unfold, but lifestyle factors significantly influence the pace. Chronic stress, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and exposure to toxins accelerate cellular damage. Conversely, balanced diets, regular exercise, and quality sleep support repair mechanisms. Understanding these factors helps explain why aging rates differ among individuals and populations.
