Operating Costs and Aging Infrastructure

Alcatraz Island prison was expensive to run. Saltwater corrosion damaged buildings, and transporting supplies and staff by boat raised costs. By the 1960s, maintenance was far higher than at newer mainland prisons.

Changing Federal Prison Policy

Officials shifted toward modern, lower-cost facilities. The federal Bureau of Prisons closed Alcatraz in 1963, citing outdated infrastructure and a desire to consolidate inmates in newer institutions.

Legacy and Current Status

After closure, Alcatraz became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It now operates as a historic site and museum, drawing millions of visitors annually. For visitor information, see the National Park Service page.
