What Happened at Windsor Castle

On 20 November 1992, a fire broke out at Windsor Castle, the official residence of the British monarch. The blaze started in the Private Chapel and spread rapidly through older parts of the building. Firefighters battled the fire for several hours, and the damage was extensive.

Damage and Restoration

The fire destroyed or damaged more than 100 rooms, including historic state apartments and the Royal Library. Restoration work took five years and cost around £37 million. Public tours and events resumed after the castle was reopened to visitors.

Why Windsor Castle Matters

Windsor Castle is one of the largest and oldest occupied castles in the world. It hosts state visits, royal ceremonies, and remains a working royal palace. Detailed information about the castle and its history is available on the Royal Collection Trust website.
