What Is the Word of Life Cult
Word of Life is a Christian movement often labeled a cult by researchers and former members. It emphasizes strict leadership, intensive discipleship, and separation from outside influences. The group is known for its campus ministry and summer camps that target youth.
Background and Teachings
The movement was founded by Jack Wyrtzen in the mid-20th century and later led by various pastors who promoted a high-commitment discipleship model. Doctrines include strong obedience to leadership, a particular view of salvation, and encouragement to live apart from secular culture. Critics say these practices create high control over members.
Concerns and Classification
Several organizations that track religious groups list Word of Life as a cult or high-control group due to reported issues with authority, isolation, and member treatment. Former participants have described pressure to cut ties with family and follow leaders unquestioningly.
