Largest Snake Ever Recorded

The largest snake in history is widely considered to be Titanoboa cerrejonensis, a prehistoric species that lived around 60 to 58 million years ago. Fossil evidence shows it could reach lengths of about 12 to 15 meters and weigh over 1,000 kilograms, making it the biggest snake known to science.

Where Titanoboa Lived

Titanoboa fossils were found in the Cerrejón Formation in present-day Colombia, in tropical rainforest environments near ancient river systems. The warm climate of that era allowed cold-blooded reptiles to grow much larger than most modern snakes, supporting massive predators like Titanoboa.

Modern Giant Snakes

Today, the longest living snakes are reticulated pythons and green anacondas, with some individuals exceeding 6 to 7 meters. While much smaller than Titanoboa, these species are still among the largest reptiles on Earth and continue to attract research and public interest.
