Early Life and Childhood

Young Charles Manson was born Charles Milles Maddox on November 12, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He spent much of his childhood in reform schools and prisons after a troubled upbringing marked by poverty and family instability. These early experiences shaped his worldview and later influenced his behavior.

Rise to Infamy

As a young adult, Manson moved between California prisons and fringe music scenes. He gathered a small group of followers, later known as the Manson Family, and promoted a twisted ideology he called "Helter Skelter." Authorities say he manipulated vulnerable young people through charismatic control and apocalyptic rhetoric.

Legacy and Death

Manson died in prison on November 19, 2017, at age 83. His crimes and cult leadership remain a subject of true crime research and public fascination. For more background, see the Charles Manson entry at Britannica.
